Miguel Poveda

Miguel Poveda is what is known as a "cantaor" -a singer of flamenco- and a wonderfully talented one at that. Yet contrary to the stereotypical image of this Iberian tradition, he is neither from Seville nor of Gypsy blood.
Poveda was born in the Badalona district of Barcelona, Catalonia's capital, in 1973. Just 20 years later, he would win four prizes at the 33rd Song Festival de las Minas de La Unión, including the highly prestigious 'Lampara Minera' award. His career subsequently took off at breathtaking speed. In 1994 film director Bigas Luna had him act in the film 'La Teta I La Luna', and one year later he recorded his first album 'Viento del Este'.
Before long he was invited to perform in festivals both in Spain and abroad, including a tour in Japan in 1996.
In 1997 he produced a show for the University of Bologna, Italy on the Poets of the Generation of Garcia Lorca, performing the following year in the 'Festival of Culture and Arts' in Ramallah, Palestine.
His second opus "Suena Flamenco", released in 1999, was nominated at the Grammy Latino 2000.
A modern artist, open to new sounds and influences and still profoundly conscious of the age-old roots of his art, in 2000 Miguel Poveda collaborated with Joan Albert Amargós and his preferred guitarist Chicuelo in the innovative production "Flamenco en Orquesta", presented at that year's summer 'Grec' Festival in Barcelona.
An instinctive singer, with the rare talent to captivate his audience with a single note, Poveda is clearly one of the "crème" of "'cantaors" from flamenco's younger generation.
